Long coats are so popular right now. Today we are going to go through all the ways you can style them. After all, we wear coats for about 6 months each year! During the cold season, our style revolves around our coats and that is why it is important to know how to style them well. 

Today I want to give you a formula that helps you style your coat better!

So let’s begin…

No matter what type of coat you are wearing or what is popular at a time. There are only two main ways to wear any coat.

A: You close the front fully, using belt or buttoning it up.

B: You leave it open.

The only two ways to wear a long coat

Each of these styles have their own pros and cons. Each are better with certain types of clothing to create the best optimal outfit style.

Option A : When you close your long coat fully

When it is cold, you will probably prefer to close your coat fully. Well, the good news is, it is much easier to create a presentable style when your coat is closed. Why? because you are covering a large portion of your body with your coat. As long as you pick a classy looking coat you are going to crush it because it is the most visible and therefore catches the attention! 🙂

Other pieces that are visible are your pants ( if you are wearing any) and your shoes as you see in the illustration above. Which we will talk more about later in the post.

Option B : When you leave your long coat open

During Fall and Spring, this style is more popular and functional. When you leave your coat open, as you can see in the image below, you are showing a good portion of what is underneath. This style requires more effort to create the best overall look and create well-balanced color harmony.

Ways to style option A :

When you close your coat

1. Wear it with something short

The easiest way to style a closed coat is to wear shorts or skirts underneath. If you wear something shorter than your coat it won’t be visible. This style is great for those who are obsessed with looking good but sometimes feel lazy to do so. Make sure you tie the belt real nice so it won’t open up 😀

Another benefit is easier color harmony. When you have a lower number of visible items in your style you can create color harmony much easier!

In this style your coat plays the most important role, the color and the design can upgrade or downgrade your overall look. After that your shoes and bag have equal, but important value.

2. Wear it with pants

Sometimes it is too cold to look good, lol and pairing your coat with pants sounds more like a logical idea! In this style your pants and shoes are the major items you need to create harmony with and you can be more forgiving with the color of your bag

Note: If you pair your long coat with pants, try to create a balance between your pants fit and your coat fit. What do I mean by that? For example, if your coat is oversized, don’t wear leggings with them. The disproportion is visually unappealing.

Ways to style option B :

When you leave your coat open

1. Wear it with a shirt and pants:

As I said earlier, when you leave your coat open, you are showing more of what is underneath and therefore you need to pay more attention to the colors you are pairing together. That is why monochromatic and neutral styles are recommended during the cold seasons. If you plan on being more adventurous with the colors to wear, you can use the chart below and see how big of an impact each item’s color has in your style.

2. Wear it with a shirt and shorts or skirts

Like the first ways, here you are dealing with more items and therefore a harder job on color harmony. The only difference here is that the impact of your shorts/skirts are not as high compared to when you are wearing pants and the three major items you need to focus more on are your coat, of course, your shirt and your shoes.
