Everybody wants to know what colors they should wear to look best. I love the days I collect tons of compliments on my outfit style. I bet you do too! People might only comment on your overall look, but know color is playing a major factor.
I’m sure you’ve read tons of posts or completed blog quizzes on how to identify your skin tone, but if you are here, you might still be confused about the colors you should pick. No worries, I got you! I will give you a new, easy-to-understand, easy-to-apply way. Ready tiger?
There are 2 ways to determine your power colors
1. The no-brainer way
2. The easy to apply guide
Let’s start with the super simple way.
The No-Brainer way
Compliments:
What are the clothes you get complimented on most? As I said earlier, a big part of your style is the colors you pick, even if people don’t mention it. You get compliments because you are visually appealing, so use it to your benefit.
You might say I don’t remember! Well, that’s ok. From now on, take a second after you get the compliment, go to the mirror and pay attention to what you did. Become mindful of it.
Mirror and your gut
A mirror and your gut are your self-styling buddies, and they are the most honest ones. If you have a full-length mirror, which you should, go in front of it and see what you feel. You have spent the most time with yourself; you are more perceptive than you think. Trust your gut! It doesn’t lie. If you feel good, energetic, radiant, confident, or anything positive, that’s your gut’s way of guiding you. Listen to yourself and trust your feelings.
Your subconscious
Your subconscious creates the formula by a blend of compliments, personal taste, lifestyle match and so many other factors that you don’t actively analyze each time you shop, but it’s there. How to figure out this one?
Easy, what colors do you normally shop for? What colors do you usually consider buying?
This one doesn’t work as well if you buy everything in any color or just buy easy colors to match constantly. But if you have always put effort to get the right pieces, you can rely on it.
Ok, that’s was the simple way. What is the tactical way?
The easy-to-understand, easy to apply guide
I remember the first time I googled ” What colors look good on me? ” I was bombarded with quizzes asking, what color is your hair, how much do you burn in the sun, what color is your vein? After all that work, it told me that red is my color!
I understand the reasoning behind it, but it wasn’t enough for two reasons:
- I can’t only wear one or two colors because they look best on me.
- Each color has tons of shades, and I wasn’t sure which one I should pick each time I was shopping.
So anyway, I thought about a guideline that might not be as specific, but gives some practical answers. I studied runways from 2010 to 2019, and fashionable celebrities, and narrowed down skin tones to the 7 categories below and tried to put enough colors for each of those so you can build a wardrobe based on it. So here it goes:
Find where you stand
- This should be the current color of your skin. If it is summer and you have tanned, pick the closest color post tanning.
- If you wear makeup, pick the color that is closest after you have done your makeup.
- . Focus more on the name of skin-tone (like, Dark brown) rather than the colors it shows. Don’t be like, oh it’s not exactly my color, there are tons of shades for any skin colors.
